History of the SPIN-BEEDan Gapen Sr. came up with this NEW lure idea by reaching back in time to 1940 when working in his father's (Don Gapen) fly-tying shop in Nipigon, Ontario Canada. His father, Don, created the first "directly-attached" spinner to a fly which he then called the Flub-Dub. This fly had a bent willow leaf blade attached to the rear of the fly which rotated as the fly was retrieved. Combining this idea with the body of a bumble bee fly (a pattern which has always been popular with fly fishermen for panfish & trout) and adding an eye jighead, made quite the seductive lure.
The vertical striping created by the bumble bee pattern style fly, represents the striping found on many of our water's bait fish, dart fish such as perch and darter minnows. The tail spinner adds an attractive flash to the bait which draws fish the lure from as far as 25 feet away.
Tests proved the new SPIN-BEE to produce bass, walleye, pike, white bass, and trout readily. However, the benefits of also adding scent was soon discovered. To accomplish this, there was a need to reduce the bulk of the trailing spinner, so it was taken off, and the body was shortened to allow the attachment of live bait and scented devices like the
RED BALL. This was done and Dan had created an attractive bait carrier for livebait such as worms, grubs, minnows, leeches, and cut bait. From this, the
SPIN-BEE BT was born.
It was decided to make the SPIN-BEE in 1/16 oz for panfish and trout, 1/8 oz for all general use, and 1/4 oz for your bigger gamefish such as bass, walleye, trout, whitebass, and northern pike. For saltwater species, the 1/8 oz and 1/4 oz would do the best job.
The first SPIN-BEE with a spinner was tied by Dan Gapen Sr. in July of 2010 and field tested almost immediately. Like all of Gapen's new products, there is two-years of field testing before released to the public to make sure our customers are being delivered a quality product. The SPIN-BEE has met our two year field testing approval and is now ready for purchase!
